Highway Legends (Play'n Go) Slot Review
Highway Legends: Slot Overview
Usually, when we start our online slot reviews, we want to come up with an original introduction text. We then tell a little story about the slot that will be reviewed in the next few sections. And most of the time this isn’t too hard, as we have a general theme to follow. But with this one, Play’n Go tried to create something else. Something we’re not entirely sure what it is based on, if even. So we’ll just let them do the talking instead, this is Play’n Go’s Highway Legends.
Playing Board
Highway Legends is a 5-reel slot with 3 rows. In order to determine wins, the game will use 20 different set paylines on which you can win. Highway Legends has received a medium volatility rating by its creators at Play’n Go. Bet sizes range from 0.10€ to 100€ (or equivalent). These may vary depending on where you play.
Winning Symbols
There are a total of 9 or rather 10 winning symbols to be found in Highway Legends. These can be divided into 4 low-tier, 3 mid-tier and 2 higher paying symbols. We will start right off with the lower paying symbols. These are occupied by the Royals, which are classic winning symbols from J to A. The J’s and Q’s will net you 4 times your bet size per full way. And these are followed right away by the K’s and A’s, which clock in at 5 times your bet size. These will already conclude the low-tier symbols.
In the mid-tier section you will find more unique winning symbols, that seem to follow the theme of the game. So first we have a pair of jade ear rings, which will pay you 10 times your bet size per full way. These are followed by a ring with a purple gem in it, clocking in at 15 times your bet size. And the last mid-paying symbols will be the amulet with a red gem, netting you 20 times your bet size for a full line.
Last but not least, we have 2 higher paying symbols for you. These are represented by two people with guns. First is the man wearing all red and a mask. He will net you 25 times your bet size for a full line. And the other person is a woman with long blonde hair wearing blue. She will pay you 30 times your bet size.
Now you might wonder why we mentioned a 10th winning symbol. Well, we’re not going to spoil anything, but we can tell you that the lady in blue is not our top symbol.
Highway Legends: Special Symbols and Stats
Highway Legends will feature a few special symbols that will help you achieve big wins. Let’s take a closer look at them.
Scatter Symbol
The scatter symbol will allow you to access the free spins feature. It is represented by a tricorne with a feather on it. Although not specifically stated in the game rules, we are pretty sure that scatter symbols can only land on reels 1, 3 and 5. In order to access the free spins feature, you will need to land all 3 scatter symbols in the same spin. What exactly awaits you in the free spins feature, will be covered later on in our Feature Overview section.
Wild Symbol
The wild symbol can appear at any time on all reels during the base game or the free spins feature. This symbol is shown by two crossed guns. Wild symbols will substitute for any winning symbols, except for scatters, Cash Collect or cash bags. They actually also have their own payout. A full line of wild symbols will net you 50 times your bet size, making it easily our top symbol.
Cash Bags and Cash Collect
Talking about cash bags, these will regularly appear on any reel during the base game. These will always come with a set amount of money on them. This amount can vary from 2 times to 30 times your bet size. The amount shown on the cash bags will already be multiplied with your current bet size. So for example, if a bag shows „12“ on a 2€ bet, this bag carries a 6x bet multiplier.
But how do you actually collect them? Well, that’s not too hard. All you have to do is land the Cash Collect symbol. This symbol is rather easily recognizable. It is shown by a plaque with a golden outline and the label „Cash Collect“. Again, although not specifically stated, we are sure that this symbol can only land on reel 5. As soon as it lands, it will collect any cash bag values in view and grant you the win. Both cash bags and Cash Collect can only appear during the base game.
Stats
Usually in this section we would now feed you with stats about the game. Unfortunately, Play’n Go do not publish a lot of interesting things about their games, which is really a shame. There’s not a lot we can tell you about Highway Legends in this regard. What we know is that the game comes with a base RTP of 96.25%. The max win potential seems to be capped at 1,250 times your bet size. It has to be the overall cap, since the maximum win per spin is capped at 1,000 times your bet size for a full screen of wilds. But we’re afraid that that’s all we can give you.
Highway Legends: Feature Overview
Now that we know all of the special symbols, let’s see what they are all about and how we can use them in our features.
Robber Free Spins Trigger
The Robber Free Spins Trigger is a feature which is exclusive to the base game. With this feature, you will get a guaranteed free spins trigger. Although again, this is not mentioned in the game rules, our tests showed that this feature can most likely only be triggered if you have at least 2 scatter symbols. We are not certainly sure if the scatters need to be on reels 1 and 3 in order to trigger this feature. But when it does, the missing scatter will be spun in.
Free Spins Feature
Talking about free spins, landing all 3 scatters on reels 1, 3 and 5 will result in you getting 10 free spins. You will now have the choice between two different features. One is called Stacked Wild Hold Up, while the other onbe is called Roaming Rider Wilds.
Stacked Wild Hold Up
Upon entering the Stacked Wild Hold Up feature, you will get 10 free spins. In this feature, on any spin, the reels can glow up. When this happens, reels are guaranteed to become wild reels. There can be 1 to 5 wild reels at the same time, with 5 of them paying you a whopping 1,000 times your bet size for a full screen. The feature will end whenever you have used all of your free spins, as retriggering the feature is not possible.
Roaming Rider Wilds
When choosing this feature, you will also be granted 10 free spins. In this feature, every wild symbol that will land, will also become sticky, which means that it will not leave the playing board until the feature is over. Additionally, it will also become a roaming wild. This means that it will change its position on every spin. As well as with the Stacked Wild Hold Up, you will not be able to retrigger this feature. So the feature will end once you have used all of your available free spins.
Highway Legends: Conclusion
Before we go into any rating, we will just admire how beautifully designed Highway Legends is. We know by now that Play’n Go are masters at their craft and know how to design a slot game perfectly. But it still amazes us how every game they release is a sight to behold.
Unfortunately, great looks do not make a great game. It is a cherry on the top, but putting a cherry on something that’s not good, doesn’t make it better. Highway Legends is this type of game where you think „Yeah, has been fun for the past 5 minutes, but i think i’ll move on“. The game doesn’t really have much exciting moments. The most thrilling moments are probably from the Stacked Wild Hold Up feature game, where you actually have a chance on a full screen of wilds, but even this feels rather hard to get.
One of the biggest flaws of the game is probably the base game. It does not have much to offer besides the Cash Collect feature, which does add very little value to the game. Highway Legends feels a lot like one of Play’n Go’s earlier releases, and is a good example that looks cannot substitute for content or gameplay.
