Captain Glum Pirate Hunter (Play'n Go) Slot Review
Captain Glum Pirate Hunter: Slot Overview
Ahoy, you landlubbers, sprats and sea dogs. Are you ready for an awesome pirate hunting adventure? We can certainly say that we are. And so are Play’n Go, because they present us a story we hopefully won’t forget that easily. So sit back, relax and let us tell you about Captain Clum Pirate Hunter.
Playing Board
Captain Glum Pirate Hunter is a 5-reel slot with 3 to 5 rows. To calculate wins, the games uses the Connected Ways/Lines mechanic. This means that a win is formed as long as at least 3 symbols are connected on adjacent reels eather horizontally or diagonally. Bet sizes range from 0.05€ to 100€ (or equivalent), but may vary depending on where you play.
Winning Symbols
Captain Glum Pirate Hunter „only“ features 8 different winning symbols, of which two of them have a special function. But let’s divide them first, you will find 4 low-paying, 2 mid-paying and 2 high-tier symbols. For the lower paying symbols, Play’n Go went with the classic card suits. These consist of clubs, spades, hearts and diamonds. These will all net you the same amount, paying 0.6 times your bet size for a full connected way.
Next up are the mid-tier symbols. Here you will find two different types of ships. The first one is the pirate ship with a green sail, netting you 1 time your bet size. The other one is the pirate hunter ship, recognizeable by a red sail. These will pay you 1.2 times your bet size for a full connected way. Both of these ships will play an important role later on.
Last but not least are our higher paying symbols. These two are occupied by the leaders of the two factions. So first there is the pirate leader with green hair, clocking in at 2.4 times your bet size. The other one is none other than Captain Glum himself, paying you 5 times your bet size per full connected way.
Captain Glum Pirate Hunter: Special Symbols and Stats
Even the infamous Captain Glum will need some help in order to fend off the pirates. Luckily, there are some special symbols that will help with this task.
Scatter Symbol
The scatter symbol is respresented by a golden skull with blue eyes. If you land 3 or more in the same spin, you will be able to enter the Free Spins feature. But that’s not the only thing they are good for. Scatter symbols are used in another feature, that we will cover in the Feature Overview section.
Permanent Wild
When playing Captain Glum Pirate Hunter, you will notice a 3-by-3 square in the middle of the playing board. This is the area for the permanent wild, which is shown by a golden ship with the label „WILD“. This symbol will substitute for any winning symbol except scatter symbols. On any spin, the permanent wild will change to one of 9 possible positions on the playing board. As the name suggests, this symbol is always active in the base game. Just like the scatter symbols, it is also used in another feature.
Wake Wild
Wake wild symbols are pretty much the same like the permanent wild, at least in their function. They will also substitute for winning symbols. But other than the permanent wild, wake wilds cannot occur naturally and can only land via a special feature.
Stats
Since Play’n Go do not release a lot of stats about their games, there isn’t much we can tell you. We have no information about the RTP of Captain Glum Pirate Hunter yet, as soon as we know more we will add it here. The max win of the game is capped at 9,000 times your bet size. The game was rated with a high volatility by Play’n Go themselves.
Captain Glum Pirate Hunter: Feature Overview
Now we’ve already talked a lot about features, but lets take a look at what to expect in Captain Glum Pirate Hunter.
Captain’s Due
Whenever one or two scatter symbols land, the Captain’s Due feature can trigger. In this feature, the permanent wild can take the position of one of the scatter symbols, even if it is outside the golden square. On its way to the scatter symbol, it will leave behind wake wilds. This is the only way to get wake wilds in the base game.
Free Spins Feature
3 or more scatter symbols in the same spin will grant you access to the free spins feature. During the feature, the clouds will settle and two ships appear on the top and bottom of the screen. The upper one belongs to the pirates, while the bottom one belongs to the pirate hunters. In this feature, any ship can fire a broadside. This broadside will either hit the enemy flagship or one of the enemy mid-paying faction ships. If they hit the enemy flagship, their side will break lose and reveal more positions on the playing board. If an enemy mid-tier ship is hit, they will turn into wake wilds. However, cannons can take between 1 to 3 spins to reload.
The feature will end once you have no more free spins or the max win potential of 9,000 times your bet size has been reached.
Treasure Hunt
In the free spins feature, there will be counter on the right side of the screen. These counters will count how many ships each faction has destroyed over the course of the feature. If your faction, the bottom one, manages to destroy more ships than the other, you will be brought to the treasure hunt feature. In this feature you will be presented with 3 chests. These chests contain a multiplier of x2, x3 or x10. After picking one chest, the multiplier is revealed and then applied to your total win of the free spin feature. Keep in mind though, that this feature can only be triggered if the pirate hunter faction destroyed more ships. Draw or defeat will not result in a treasure hunt.
Captain Glum Pirate Hunter: Conclusion
Captain Glum Pirate Hunter is most definitely an interesting game. We love to see this creative approach of Play’n Go, as they have with many games. So is Captain Glum Pirate Hunter a gem to behold? Hard to tell. First of all, it really is a beautifully designed slot. Play’n Go have proven once again that they know how to cover a game in art. But there are a few things that bother us.
The base game feels very flat. Yes, sometimes if you’re lucky you will also get a big win in the base game, but most of the time there isn’t much happening. Even the Captain’s Due feature often results in little to nothing, and we’re missing a bit of excitement. So is the bonus game much better in comparison? Well, it definitely holds way more thrill than the base game, but it still feels like something is missing. Maybe if the wake wilds were sticky, or one of the ships would fire on every spin, that would spice it up by a lot. But unfortunately, that’s not on the menu.
All in all, Captain Glum Pirate Hunter is a solid game. It has its ups and down, as well as its special moments, but it will not be the premium game that will catapult Play’n Go’s popularity through the rooftop.
