So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Mystery of the Orient, that was created by Pragmatic Play in partnership with Wild Streak Gaming, has an asian touch to it. Mystery of the Orient is played on 5 reels with 3 to 6 rows and 243 win ways by default. Don’t worry, it will all make sense in the end. Bet sizes range from 0.25€ to 125€ (or equivalent) and may vary depending on where you play.

In Mystery of the Orient we have 11 different winning symbols, that are pretty unspectacular, yet kinda fit the theme. There are 6 winning symbols on the lower end and 5 on the higher end. Let’s begin with the lower end. Here you will find the classic symbols from 9 to A. For full ways of 9’s and 10’s you will get 0.8-times your bet size, J’s bring 1-time your bet size, Q’s and K’s clocking in at 1.2-times your bet size and finally, the A’s coming in at 1.6-times your bet size. Nothing too spectacular here.

Now on to the higher tier symbols. First up we have the Mandolin and the Sword, coming in at 2-times your bet size for a full way. Next up is the Box of Gold for 2.4-times your bet size. Second-to-last is the Tiger for 3-times your bet size. And last but not least we have our top symbol, the Asian Sword Girl for 4-times your bet size for a full way.

Mystery of the Orient: Special Symbols and Stats

Believe it or not, Mystery of the Orient actually comes with quite a lot of Special symbols.

First up we have the Wild symbol, portrayed by an ancient black and gold coin. As usual, the Wild symbol substitutes for ALL winning symbols except Bonus symbols. Keep that in mind. Wild symbols can only appear on reels 2, 3 and 4.

Talking about Bonus symbol, this one is showcased by a yin-yang symbol. Landing 3 or more of these in the same spin will award you with Free Spins. The more you trigger with, the more Free Spins are granted.

Next up is the mystery symbol, portrayed by a Shoji screen. The Mystery symbol reveals one of three random symbols. One of those symbols is the Scatter symbol, which rewards payouts depending on how many of them you have on the screen at the same time. 3 of them will pay you 10-times your bet size, 4 of them will pay you 40-times your bet size and 5 of them will grant you the GRAND jackpot of 8,000-times your total bet. By the way, the description of the Wild symbol does not specifically state that it cannot substitute for Scatter symbols. So we’re not sure if this was an oversight from Wild Streak Gaming or if Wild symbols can actually substitute for them. The other two symbols the Mystery symbol an unveil is the Bonus symbol and the Wild symbol. The latter has a special interaction here though, which we will cover in detail in our Feature Overview.

There are also 2 Free Spins exclusive symbols that we will mention here. First is the Reel Size Increase symbol, portrayed by an arrow pointing upwards. As you might have already guessed, it increases the reel size in Free Spins up to a maximum of 6. And the other symbol is the Red Envelope, which will randomly award you with 1 to 5 Free Spins.

Alright, let’s take a look at the stats. Mystery of the Orient comes with a base RTP of 96.00%, which is at the edge of being average. You can expect a win roughly once every 4 spins. Free Spins are triggered once around every 166 spins. Now for the max win potential. Mystery of the Orient is capped at 8,035-times your bet size, which basically means that you need to get 5 Scatter symbols in order to get a max win. But the chances are so incredibly low that we doubt that it will happen anytime soon. Because for a max win to happen you will on average need 20,408,163 spins. This is just a massive disappointment because it just makes it so unrealistic to ever see a max win on this game.

Mystery of the Orient has some interesting features we would like to share with you.

• Random Multiplier

We kinda teased earlier that Wild symbols and Mystery symbols have a special interaction. You see, when a Wild symbol is revealed by a Mystery symbol, it can have a multiplier between x2 and x25. Needless to say, an x25 multiplier can be quite lucrative. Multipliers are applied to all wins that pass the Wild symbol. If more than one multiplier would apply, then the multipliers are added to each other.

• Free Spins

Landing 3, 4 or 5 Bonus symbols in the same spin will let you enter the Free Spins Feature. You will be granted 15, 20 or 25 spins, depending on how many Bonus symbols you have triggered with. During Free Spins you will get two additional symbols in the Mystery symbol reveal, as mentioned before. If you manage to increase all reel sizes to maximum, you are granted 7,776 maximum ways to win. Free Spins can be retriggered, either through the Red Envelope, which grants a random amount of Free Spins between 1 and 5 or via the Bonus symbol. Landing 2 or more of them in the same spin will grant you 2, 3, 4 or 5 additional spins, depending on how many you have triggered with.

• Bonus Buy Feature

Mystery of the Orient comes with a Bonus Buy Feature. You can pay 100-times your bet size to get a trigger spin with at least 3 Bonus symbols. Of course you also have the chance of getting 4 or 5 Bonus symbols, granting you 20 or 25 Free Spins respectively. Interestingly, there is no difference in RTP between the base game and the Bonus Buy Feature, which is quite unusual.

Mystery of the Orient: Conclusion

Mystery of the Orient is mid, at best. We know that asian-themed online slot games are a thing and of course they have a right to exist. At least if they are done properly. Because Mystery of the Orient is not. We would love to enjoy the theme and the well designed winning symbols, if there were any, but we can’t. Because some factors don’t work together, let it be the spinning sound, the win sound or even the Big Win animations. They all just don’t fit in this theme, and it’s not really fun to play it like that.

Besides these design flaws, the stats of the game look terrible. Although we need to be more precise here. The max win probability looks terrible. We say this a lot, but there are games out there with far greater max win potential and probability.

All in all, we’re a bit disappointed to be honest. Mystery of the Orient looked like a nice asian-themed game with a good potential but it wasn’t as much fun to us as we had hoped it would be.
